Welcome to the New DELOS...where for $1200 a day one can ski the desert slopes of Mars, play a game of holographic chess, challenge a knight in an authentic recreation of a medieval tournament, watch as years of age fade away replaced with the days of youth...all with a simple drink from an enchanted fountain, or have a passionate rendezvous with any number of attractive robot women (or men). Yes, all this and more awaits you at DELOS...the hedonist's ultimate destination.

Futureworld, American International's $3,000,000 sequel to Michael Crichton's 1973 film debut, Westworld, takes place nearly two years after the original adult amusement park's tragedy, when malfunctioning robots killed scores of guests and staff workers causing the immediate closing of the resort. In this sequel, starring Peter Fonda and Blythe Danner as rival investigative journalists Chuck Browning and Tracy Ballard, DELOS (now greatly expanded from the "Westworld" days) is reopened for business and attracting wealthy guests, multinational government officials and technological leaders most of whom are done away with and replaced with genetically engineered replicas whose mission is to assist the officials of DELOS in their plan of establishing a new world order.

By 1976, composer Fred Karlin had scored a number of feature films and important television projects, most notably the multi award-winning CBS epic The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, for which Karlin won a 1974 Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in Music Composition and Lovers and Other Strangers (1971) for which he received an Oscar for Best Song ("For All We Know"). Having already scored Crichton's Westworld, it came as no surprise that Karlin was brought aboard to score its sequel, Futureworld. Unlike the score of its predecessor (which Karlin largely self-performed in his home studio of the time), the score for Futureworld employs studio orchestra augmented with a small battery of synthesizers of the day, recorded live on the scoring stage to augment and enhance the traditional orchestra palette. This practice was also utilized by Jerry Goldsmith in the recording of his score for Logan's Run (also from 1976).

Though Karlin had little time to compose the nearly one hour score, the result is a compositionally economical, musically varied effort which succeeds mightily in musically reflecting the many facets of Browning and Ballard's DELOS adventure.

About this CD


This album contains more than 40 minutes of previously unreleased Futureworld score. Although the only available archival sources were stereo 1/4” analog tapes and audiocassette, Karlin and the sound engineer, Michael Stern, brilliantly improved the sound quality of all the cues and weaved them into the long, coherent tracks for a new listening experience. The 24-page color booklet features rare film stills and production design sketches from the MGM archives. The extensive liner notes are by the composer, Bill Boston and Michael Stern. The CD also features the suite from Westworld, which was created, by the composer, with the original soundtrack cues. Another small bonus for keen collectors -- the first 1,000 copies will have an ad strip (Obi) in the package. So don’t miss out!
